JASON NJOKU...LONDON MR NOLLYWOOD (Our personality of the week)

-->

“Moving Back In With My Mum Was Kind Of Humiliating” – Jason Njoku

“Every film industry needs a mogul and for Nigeria’s film industry, Nollywood, Jason Njoku might just be it”. – Forbes Africa, September 2012.
That’s how the September 2012 issue of Forbes Africa magazine begins a centre spread feature of Nigerian Internet maverick and millionaire, Jason Njoku, co-founder of the Iroko brand.
With a vernacular peppered with swearwords and a touch of the charming South London wideboy, Njoku, 31, made headlines back in April when Tiger Global, a $9 billion private equity fund, led an $8 million funding round backing his latest venture, Iroko Partners, writes Pete Guest.
Recall that in an exclusive interview with TechLoy back in April 2012, Njoku shared how his company’s awesome Internet offerings attracted funding from a $9 billion venture and private equity firm as well as some of the company’s figures and future plans.
The deal which is considered the largest early-stage deal ever announced by any Africa-focused tech company has catapulted the London-born businessmen into the position of a bona fide wunderkind, the magazine added in its opening words.
In the feature, Njoku shared his own personal story about failure, mistakes and success. “I spent a good three years making every mistake there was to make about how to run a business,”, he said. “I ran out of money, I ran out of friends who would lend me money. I was forced to stop.”
Njoku revealed that before Iroko Partners, he ran at least ten ventures including a blog network, a magazine, a T-shirt company and a web design venture in the past, some multi-year projects, while others lasted for a  few months. He even had a short hiatus in formal employment, as a recruitment consultant in London.
At a point, he was forced to move in with his mum, which Njoku described as “kind of humiliating”, although “it’s kind of the hero’s journey”. And that move gave birth to the idea for Iroko Partners.
Apparently, Jason’s mother, who he remembers mainly watching British soap operas on TV, was now watching Nollywood films on DVD, but finding these movies to buy online wasn’t possible and even the stores in London’s Brixton Market offered neither an identification of Nollywood films on the movie shelves nor any kind of formalised, organised distribution.
That’s when he thought to himself: “this thing seems to be very popular, but there seems to be no distribution around it.”
The rest is history.
Jason Njoku was TechLoy’s Person of The Year 2011, for giving Nollywood movies a new home online and making it accessible for free to movie lovers; for revolutionising the way we watch movies and listen to music online. You can read the full Forbes story on Jason’s personal blog

OUR ARTISTS OF THE WEEK...MAROON-5

-->
Maroon 5 is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. While they were in high school, lead vocalist and guitarist Adam Levine, keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, bass guitarist Mickey Madden, and drummer Ryan Dusick formed a garage band called Kara's Flowers and released one album in 1997.

After a brief period they re-formed with guitarist James Valentine, and pursued a new, more pop-oriented direction as Maroon 5. In 2002 they released their debut album Songs About Jane, which contained four hit singles: "Harder to Breathe", "This Love", "She Will Be Loved" and "Sunday Morning"; it also enjoyed major chart success, going gold, platinum, and triple platinum in many countries around the world.

In support of Songs About Jane, Maroon 5 toured extensively throughout 2003–2005 and during that period of time two live albums were released. The band won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2005. Dusick left the band in September 2006, citing injuries sustained by constant touring, and was replaced by Matt Flynn.

Maroon 5's second studio album It Won't Be Soon Before Long was released in 2007, with the singles "Makes Me Wonder", which was their first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, "Won't Go Home Without You" and "Wake Up Call". The band performed live in two tours between June and November 2007. During that time a compilation of previously unreleased songs, The B-Side Collection, were released.

Two more live albums and a remix album were issued in 2008. Maroon 5's third studio album Hands All Over was released in the United States on September 21, 2010. Since debuting in 2002, the band has sold over 10 million albums in the United States.

Maroon 5's biggest hit yet is "Moves like Jagger" featuring Christina Aguilera, selling over 8 million copies worldwide as of June 2012, therefore establishing itself among the best-selling singles of all time. On March 26, 2012, Maroon 5 announced their fourth studio album, Overexposed. It was released on June 26, 2012.

The lead single "Payphone", which features rapper Wiz Khalifa, debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and eventually rose to number two on the chart. The second single from the album, "One More Night", became the band's third number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. On 26 August 2012, during their Overexposed Tour in South America, Maroon 5 performed in front of 30.000 people at Arena Anhembi, São Paulo, Brazil, which according to Levine has become their biggest paying public to an exclusive concert of the band to date.

Sandip Mansukbai Sheladiya, 24, owner of Rajan and Riya gold buying company was found in a pool of blood by his cook Thursday evening in his office at Adiembra, a suburb of Kumasi. Police are investigating a suspect in connection with the crime. The gold dealer popularly known as Sandip was found in a pool of blood by his cook in his office at Adiembra. He was lying face down in a pool of blood with few signs of struggle.

The cook who gave her name as Charity, told the police, she saw a taxi-cab parked by the roadside and a tall dark man coming out of the office. Some residents in the area say they saw a taxi-cab pull up some metres away from the office before the unpleasant incident. Friends and close associates who were at the crime scene ruled out robbery. After three months of live studio competitions and evictions, the finale at the National Theatre lived to its billing. From the word go, it was Emefa who made her presence felt. She was the main competition on the night giving her competitors a run for her money.

During the talent segment of the competition, 23-year-old Emefa who is a graduate of the Tarkorado Polytechnic got Linda Ampah, a judge of the show, on her feet giving her a standing ovation. UPDATE: ERNEST BAI KOROMAN IS THE NEW PRESIDENT OF SIERRA LEONE!

-->
President Ernest Bai Koroma Is The Winner, As Nation Explodes With Joy For His Victory

Dr Ernest Bai Koroma, the son of an itinerant Weslyan preacher and a devout christian mother who always encouraged the saying of the grace at family meals, has done it again. He has won Sierra Leone’s fourth post-war Presidential elections by clearly beating his challenger , a former military junta leader, Maada Bio,  who campaigned on the platform of a New Direction which we can now safely say that voters rejected for the Agenda For Change that Koroma has used over the five years of his first term to transform Sierra Leone.

Koroma beat Bio, collecting 1, 314,881 votes , representing 58%   of the total votes that were enough to earn him a second term. SLPP Presidential candidate , Mr Maada Bio, polled only 837, 517 representing 37% of the total valid votes.

image
Ernest Bai Koroma, the all embracing leader
And the whole nation which had been waiting anxiously for the results has burst into raptures of joy. Taxi and okada drivers are abandoning their vehicles and kneeling on the ground and kissing it and thanking God for bringing back President Koroma, the man credited for bringing back electricity and water supply after decades of darkness and constructing magnificent infrastructure that have change the face of the nation. Thousands upon thousands of jubilant Sierra Leoneans are dancing on the streets like it is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

The whole nation has gone red, the colour of President Koroma’s All People’s Congress ( APC ) party , which has also scored a large majority in parliamentary and local council seats. Red-shirted supporters are dancing everywhere in the nation and it will not be a surprise if the next few days become unofficial holidays as Sierra Leoneans celebrate the return of the Ernest Koroma Government, which has made Sierra Leone the envy of other West African nations with its socio-economic and political developments that saw the revival of farming, the resumption of mining activities, the acceleration of business and commerce,  the construction of modern highways throughout the length and breadth of the country and the prediction of the IMF and the World Bank that Sierra Leone now has the second fastest growing economy in the world. The outpouring of emotions has been unimaginable. Taxi, bus and private drivers are hooting their horns in celebration .

Koroma’s win is a victory for progressive Sierra Leoneans who decided not to vote along tribal and regional lines to give the country continuity in President Koroma’s development aspirations and achievements.

The run up to today’s announcement of the results of this watershed election was punctuated by a tense waiting period, the likes of which has never been seen before in the nation, probably rivalled by the anxiety that followed the 1967 General Elections that pitched the then sitting Prime Minister , Sir Albert Margai of the SLPP and then trade unionist Mr Siaka Stevens of the APC.

Like 1967 when the then Sierra Leone Broadcasting Service ( SLBS) played music all the way for a week , interrupted only by public service announcements, radio stations treated anxious listeners to music whole day as citizens remained on edge awaiting the announcement of the result for days. Meanwhile the nation waited, opposing party fanatics, especially the SLPP, spread rumours around the country, in discussion forums and the social media, especially Facebook.

Unlike 1967 when chaos set in with the army stepping in on the instruction of the then SLPP Government and putting the victor, Mr Stevens and newly-appointed ministers under house arrest, sparking a coup and a counter-coup within days that plunged the country into a military interregum for a year, today’s announcement only ignited widespread jubilation, but the opposition SLPP and People’s Movement For Democratic Change presidential candidates Maada Bio and Charles Margai respectively have said before the announcement they are not accepting the results.

The announcement of the result of what was described as watershed elections came as a welcome relief to millions of Sierra Leoneans at home and abroad who have been transfixed and kept at the edge of their seats for a week since elections day last Saturday.

CHASI CHARGED WITH RAPING DAUGHTER, MURDERING WIFE

-->

72-year-old man released from prison, suspected of murdering wife after finding out she is pregnant.

RENOWNED black empowerment activist Sonny Chasi appeared in court yesterday facing charges of murdering his wife and raping his biological daughter. The daughter was 12 years when he committed the offence.

Chasi (72), of Number 37 Sturton Drive, Glenvale, Richmond, who claimed detectives assaulted him, was not formally charged when he briefly appeared before Bulawayo provincial magistrate Mrs Learnmore Mapiye.

Mrs Mapiye, who ordered the State to investigate allegations of assault, remanded him in custody to 7 December. He was advised to apply to the High Court for bail in view of the charges he is facing.
Dressed in a brown and white checked shirt, Chasi stood attentively in the dock as the court interpreter read the allegations to him.

Asked if he had understood the allegations against him, Chasi speaking through the interpreter sought clarification on the dates when it is alleged he sexually abused his daughter and Mrs Mapiye clarified.
The court heard that Chasi was customarily married to Dorcus Majola (41).

Sometime in 2009, Chasi was sentenced to seven years in jail for fraud. On 6 July this year, he was released on home leave from Connemara Open Prison, outside Gweru and he came home at Number 4 Richard Allen Road in Waterford.

He discovered that Majola was four months pregnant and they had an argument over the pregnancy and Chasi allegedly assaulted her and she ran away from the house.

He went back to prison and was released on 2 November and when he came to Bulawayo he discovered that his wife had relocated to Lobengula West and he followed her. The State alleges that he demanded to know who was responsible for the pregnancy and allegedly threatened to kill her and the unborn baby.
He allegedly forcibly moved into her lodgings and stayed with her and the State is alleging that she was living in fear, which prompted her on 13 November, to visit the Magwegwe Police Community Relations and Liaison Office, but Chasi allegedly continued with his death threats.

On 15 November, at about 3pm, Chasi, who was now allegedly stalking Majola, went to her workplace at a Bulawayo hotel and picked her up.

He allegedly forced her to go with him to Bambanani Centre where they both underwent HIV tests.
The State is alleging that from the centre, he took her to an unknown destination where he allegedly assaulted her with an unknown  object.

The following morning, at about 6am, the State alleges that he carried her while she was unconscious and bleeding profusely from the injuries she had sustained, to the intersection of Lawley Road and 4th Street in Suburbs.

He called the police and allegedly made a false report that he and his wife had been robbed by four men.
The police attended the scene and Majola was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals where she died from the injuries she had sustained later that day.

According to the post-mortem report, Majola had a ruptured placenta, depressed skull, congested brain and the baby weighing 2,9 kg also died during the assault.
On the rape charges, the State is alleging that between 1 and 31 December 2008, Chasi was staying with his family.

During that period, Majola went to Silobela leaving the children including the complainant, who was 12 years old, in the custody of Chasi. The State alleges that on a certain day and at night, Chasi called his daughter outside the house and informed her that he had been told by a inyanga that he was supposed to perform certain rituals so that the family would prosper.

He allegedly ordered her to undress, face north, west, south and east before they went back into the house.
During the night, the State alleges that he raped her before raping her on two other occasions using the same method.

They then moved to Waterford where he allegedly raped her three more times. The child later approached her class teacher and informed her about the alleged sexual abuse.

Majola came back and the class teacher summoned her to school and informed her about the abuse.
Chasi's sister came from Chihota communal lands and the State alleges that she, in the company of Majola, visited the class teacher and threatened the teacher and Majola against reporting the sexual abuse.
Chasi's sister allegedly also threatened the child and the matter was never reported until investigations into the murder case started and the child opened up.

Miss Tarisai Mutarisi appeared for the State and Mr Herbert Shenje, of Shenje and Company defended Chasi.

EX-BOXER HECTOR 'MACHO' CAMACHO DIES

-->

After patiently waiting for any news of improvement and a little miracle from above, the family of Camacho has confirmed him dead.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Hector "Macho" Camacho, a Puerto Rican boxer known for skill and flamboyance in the ring as well as for a messy personal life and run-ins with the police, was declared dead on Saturday, four days after being shot in the face. He was 50.

Shot while sitting in a parked car outside a bar Tuesday with a friend in the city of Bayamon, he was declared dead at the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan. The friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, died at the scene of the shooting. Police said Mojica had nine small bags of cocaine in his pocket and a 10th bag was found open in the car.

Originally from Bayamon, just outside San Juan, Camacho was long regarded as a flashy if volatile talent, a skilled boxer who was perhaps overshadowed by his longtime foil, Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez, who would beat him in a long-awaited showdown in Las Vegas in 1992.

Camacho fought professionally for three decades, from his humble debut against David Brown at New York's Felt Forum in 1980 to an equally forgettable swansong against Sal Duran in Kissimmee, Florida, in 2010.

In between, he fought some of the biggest stars spanning two eras, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran.

"This is something I've done all my life, you know?" Camacho told The Associated Press after a workout in 2010. "A couple years back, when I was doing it, I was still enjoying it. The competition, to see myself perform. I know I'm at the age that some people can't do this no more."

Camacho's family moved to New York when he was young and he grew up in Spanish Harlem, which at the time was rife with crime. Camacho landed in jail as a teenager before turning to boxing, which for many kids in his neighborhood provided an outlet for their aggression.

Former featherweight champion Juan Laporte, a friend since childhood, described Camacho as "like a little brother who was always getting into trouble," but otherwise combined a friendly nature with a powerful jab.

Doctor: Puerto Rico boxer Camacho is brain dead

"He's a good human being, a good hearted person," Laporte said as he waited with other friends and members of the boxer's family outside the hospital in San Juan after the shooting. "A lot of people think of him as a cocky person but that was his motto ... inside he was just a kid looking for something."

Laporte lamented that Camacho never found a mentor outside the boxing ring.

"The people around him didn't have the guts or strength to lead him in the right direction," Laporte said. "There was no one strong enough to put a hand on his shoulder and tell him how to do it."

Drug, alcohol and other problems trailed Camacho after the prime of his boxing career. He was sentenced in 2007 to seven years in prison for the burglary of a computer store in Mississippi. While arresting him on the burglary charge in January 2005, police also found the drug ecstasy.

A judge eventually suspended all but one year of the sentence and gave Camacho probation. He wound up serving two weeks in jail, though, after violating that probation.

Camacho's former wife, Amy, obtained a restraining order against him in 1998, alleging he threatened her and one of their children. The couple, who had two children at the time, later divorced.

He divided his time between Puerto Rico and Florida in recent years, appearing on Spanish-language television as well as on a reality show called "Es Macho Time!" on YouTube.

Inside the boxing ring, Camacho flourished. He won three Golden Gloves titles as an amateur, and after turning pro, he quickly became a contender with an all-action style reminiscent of other Puerto Rican fighters.

Long promoted by Don King, Camacho won his first world title by beating Rafael Limon in a super-featherweight bout in Puerto Rico on Aug. 7, 1983. He moved up in weight two years later to capture a lightweight title by defeating Jose Luis Ramirez, and successfully defended the belt against fellow countryman Edwin Rosario.

The Rosario fight, in which the victorious Camacho still took a savage beating, persuaded him to scale back his ultra-aggressive style in favor of a more cerebral, defensive approach.

The change in style was a big reason that Camacho, at the time 38-0, lost a close split decision to Greg Haugen at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in 1991.

Doctor: Puerto Rico boxer Camacho is brain dead

Camacho won the rematch to set up his signature fight against Chavez, this time at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Camacho was roundly criticized for his lack of action, and the Mexican champion won a lopsided unanimous decision to retain the lightweight title.

It was at that point that Camacho became the name opponent for other rising contenders, rather than the headliner fighting for his own glory.

He lost a unanimous decision to another young Puerto Rican fighter, Trinidad, and was soundly defeated by De La Hoya. In 1997, Camacho ended Leonard's final comeback with a fifth-round knockout. It was Camacho's last big victory even though he boxed for another decade.

"Hector was a fighter who brought a lot of excitement to boxing," said Ed Brophy, executive director of International the Boxing Hall of Fame. "He was a good champion. Roberto Duran is kind of in a class of his own, but Hector surely was an exciting fighter that gave his all to the sport."

The fighter's last title bout came in 1997 against welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya, who won by unanimous decision. Camacho's last fight was his defeat by Duran in May 2010. He had a career record of 79-6-3.

BREAKING NEWS: Mano Menezes sacked as Brazil coach

-->

The Selecao boss failed to deliver both the Copa America and Olympic trophies, and has left his post just 19 months before the 2014 World Cup.

Menezes sacked as Brazil coach

Mano Menezes has been dismissed from his post as Brazil coach following a meeting with the CBF (Brazilian Football Federation) on Thursday.

The 50-year-old took charge of his nation in 2010 after a disappointing World Cup campaign under previous coach Dunga, and led the Selecao at both the 2011 Copa America and the 2012 Olympics.

However, his side crashed out of the Argentina-hosted tournament to Paraguay on penalties, before stumbling to a 2-1 loss to Mexico in London in the summer.

Menezes released a brief statement on his official Twitter account shortly after being relieved of his duties on Friday.

"I am no longer the coach of Brazil. I thank all those that worked with me on this special project, all the players, and to all the people that believe in our work. I wish success to Selecao ahead of our biggest dream, the 2014 World Cup."

Corinthians coach Tite, Santos boss Muricy Ramalho and Luiz Felipe Scolari, who masterminded Brazil's 2002 World Cup victory, have been installed as the early favourites to succeed Menezes and continue the Selecao's preparations ahead of World Cup 2014.
